Five Retired Judges Appointed as Ad Hoc Judges to Clear the Pendency of Cases

To expedite the disposal of mounting pending cases in the Allahabad High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium has approved the appointment of five retired judges as ad hoc judges.

The decision was taken at the Collegium’s meeting held on February 3, 2026. According to Article 224A of the Constitution,

Justice Mohammad Faiz Alam Khan,

Justice Mohammad Aslam,

Justice Syed Aftab Hussain Rizvi,

Justice Renu Agarwal and

Justice Jyotsna Sharma will be appointed as an ad hoc judges of the Allahabad High Court for a tenure of two years.

It is important to mention here that the aim of said appointments is to reduce the judicial workload and increase the disposal of long-pending cases in the High Court.

Significantly, Article 224A of the Constitution specifically provides for the temporary re-appointment of retired judges in special circumstances to ensure the effective functioning of the judicial system.
