Court Rolls Out Austerity Measures, Encourages Car Pooling, Virtual Meetings and Hybrid Hearings: Allahabad High Court

Vineet Dubey

The Allahabad High Court has rolled out a set of austerity measures aimed at cutting fuel consumption and reducing avoidable expenditure in its day-to-day functioning.

By an office order issued on May 31, the Court administration has advised officers of the registry at Allahabad High Court and its Bench at Lucknow to opt for car pooling wherever practicable.

Similar suggestions have been made for other employees, who have also been encouraged to use public transport to the extent possible.

The directions come in the backdrop of a communication received from the Chief Justice of India and an Office Memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India.

The order also places emphasis on the use of virtual platforms. Meetings of Hon’ble Committees involving Chairman/Members from both the Allahabad and Lucknow benches are to be conducted online as far as circumstances permit.

In suitable cases, a co-presenting officer may be appointed to facilitate such meetings.

In a significant step, the High Court has encouraged the use of hybrid hearings. Subject to the discretion of the concerned Bench, advocates may participate in proceedings through video conferencing.

Members of the Bar and office-bearers of Bar associations have been requested to make wider use of the facility.

To support the system, the Court administration has directed the creation of a dedicated e-mail address and at least two helpline numbers for assistance relating to virtual appearances.

Necessary arrangements in this regard have been entrusted to the Registry.

The measures will apply to both the principal seat at Allahabad and the Lucknow Bench.
